STRIKE & DIP

Strike is the orientation of a rock outcrop. It is commonly expressed as a compass bearing. In this example, if we assume that north is towards the trees at the back of the image, these outcrops would have approximately a north-south strike.

Dip is the angle that the rock layer is tilted from a horizontal plane. Dip is measured as an angle and a direction, and varies from 0o (horizontal) to 90o (vertical). In this example, the layers on the left have a dip of about 30o to the west, the layers on the right have a dip of about 50o to the east.
