Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS)

The Department of Geography at the University of North Texas offers undergraduate instruction leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in either earth or regional science. Students may also elect to minor in geology or archaeology. The program has an applied focus involving the application of geographic tools, research techniques and concepts to problem-solving. Approximately 125 students major in geography at UNT. They work directly with faculty and receive individual advising.

Both BA and BS students choose geography courses per the instructions below.  BS students replace the foreign language requirement of the College by selecting two of the BS course groups below (complete two courses in each of two groups).

Required:

1170 Culture, Environment & Society (3)
OR
1200 World Regional Geography (3)

1610 Physical Geology (4)
OR
1710 Earth Science (4)

3190 Quantitative Techniques (3)
4800 Applied Geography (3)

Techniques Courses

Techniques Courses involve tools such as global positioning systems, remote sensing technology, spatial statistics and geographic information systems to collect, analyze and display geographical information.

Select Three from Techniques Courses:

4050 Cartography and Graphics (3)
4060 Applied GIS: MapInfo Professional  (3)
4170 Map-Air Photo Analysis (3)
4400 Introduction to Remote Sensing (3)
4500 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (3)
4520 Intermediate GIS (3)
4550 Advanced GIS (3)
4560 GIS Programming (3)
4980 Special Topics in GIS (3)

In addition, select a total of five courses from Groups A and B, including at least two from each group.

Group A: Earth Science

Earth Science Courses focus on resource management, the interaction between people and the physical environment, and physical geography.

3000 Geology of Texas (3)
3020 Historical Geology (3)
4350 Geomorphology (3)
4030 British Isles Field School (3)*
4240 Meteorology (3)
4250 Climatology (3)
4630 Soils Geomorphology (4)
4650 Environmental Geology (3)
4750 Fluvial Geomorphology (3)
4850 Introduction to Groundwater Hydrology (3)

Group B: Regional Science

Regional Science Courses examine the spatial patterns produced by political, urban, economic and social processes on the landscape.

3010 Economic Geography (3)
3100 Geography of the U.S. and Canada (3)
3750 Contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa (3)
3800 Geography of Texas (3)
4030 British Isles Field School (3)*
4040 Ghana Field School (6)
4120 Medical Geography (3)
4210 Urban Geography (3)
4410 Location-allocation Modeling (3)
4420 Conservation of Resources (3)
4980 Applied Retail Geography (3)
4900 Special Problems (variable credit)*
4920 Internship in Geography (3)*

* The British Isles Field School is a 6 credit-hour course divided into 3 hours of regional science and 3 hours of earth science.  GEOG 4900 and 4920 can apply to either of the Techniques, Group A or Group B, depending upon content.

BS Groups

Group 1: Computer Science

Choose two of the following:

CSCE 1020 Program Development (4)
BCIS 3610 Basic Information Systems (3)
GEOG 4560 GIS Programming (3)

Group 2:  Mathematics

Two courses, each at least 3 hours, in addition to the College requirement for meeting the Arts and Sciences Core.

Group 3: Physical and Natural/Life Sciences

Two advanced level courses, each at least 3 hours, in physics, chemistry or biology.

Math courses taken to satisfy the A&S Core cannot be applied to Group 2.  Group 3 courses may be from different departments (for example, one in physics and one in chemistry).

Geography Minor

Students planning to minor in geography should consult the geography undergraduate advisor. A minor requires 19 hours, and usually includes GEOG 1170 or 1200, 1710, and 12 advanced hours.

Geology Minor

A minor in geology requires 19-20 hours in geology and earth science, including GEOL 1610, 3000, 3020, and 4650, and two additional courses from: GEOG 4350, GEOG 4750, GEOL 4630 and GEOL 4850. Geography majors may minor in geology, but none of the courses taken to satisfy the minor can also be applied to the major.

Archaeology Minor

A minor in archaeology requires 19 hours, including ANTH 1010, ARCH 2500 and 2800; and a total of 9 hours selected from ARCH 3650, 4620 (multiple sections for separate credit) and ARCH 4810.

Geography and Earth Science Education Students

The Department of Geography also serves elementary and secondary education students at UNT. Typically, secondary education students major in their teaching field(s) and minor in secondary education.  Consult the College of Education for details.

Elementary education students major in education and take courses in geography, and other subjects, as directed by the College of Education. Those students may wish to minor in geography, because they typically take several courses in geography that may be counted toward both the course requirements in education and the geography minor.
