Introduction
The Department of Geography is located in the
Environmental Education, Science and Technology (EESAT) Building
and operates specialized laboratories for study in archaeological
science, earth science, physical geology, cartography, geomorphology,
hydrology, hydrogeology, and geographic information systems (GIS). The
Center for Spatial Analysis and Mapping (CSAM) houses leading edge
hardware and software products in support of teaching and research in
remote sensing, GIS, visualization, environmental modeling and global
positioning systems (GPS). Other allied facilities housed
in the EESAT
Building include the Environmental Modeling Laboratory, the Center for
Environmental Archaeology, and the Center for Remote Sensing and Landuse
Analyses.
Geography, the science of space and place, weaves together information
from the physical and social sciences to understand the human condition
and its relation to the environment. Geography includes studies in
earth science, regional science (cultures and populations) and land use
planning. As planners and spatial problem solvers, geographers often
use specialized software known as GIS to construct, store, and evaluate
information in different types of maps, applicable to a wide range of
societal problems. Geography majors are prepared for a broad
range of employment in both public and private sectors, including
geographic information systems (GIS), regional and urban planning,
retail and industrial site location planning, transportation planning,
parks and recreation planning, housing and community development, land
and water resources management, environmental consulting and regulatory
work, land surveying and cartography, meteorology and archaeology.
